Kickstand Connect's Peer Support Worker

How is a Peer Support Worker Different from a Doctor or Talking to a Friend?

A Peer Support Worker provides support based on their lived experience with mental health or substance use. Unlike a doctor, they don’t give medical advice or diagnoses, but offer emotional understanding and guidance. Unlike a friend, they follow a professional framework, with specific training, supervision, and ethical standards to ensure their support is effective, safe, and helpful. They are trained to work with young people, creating a space where individuals can feel heard without judgment.

Kickstand Peer Support Workers are:

  • Trained professionals with specialized skills

  • Supervised and held to standards

  • Intentional in their approach to support

  • Specifically trained to work with young people

They provide lived experience support in a structured, professional way.

Yes, Peer Support is confidential, though there may be situations where confidentiality is broken if there’s a safety concern.

Peer Support Workers provide emotional support, listen without judgment, and share insights from their own experiences to help you feel heard and understood.

Peer Support is available to young people (ages 11-25) in Alberta who need emotional support related to mental health, substance use, or life challenges.
